Preparing a trademark filing

· 3 min

A trademark application needs more than a name. Start with your actual business activities, ownership details and records.

Activities

The first step in registering a trademark comes before the application screen: explain what your business wants to protect. A coffee business may sell packaged products, prepare drinks for customers or train other businesses. Describe these activities separately to show where the mark will be used. Distinguish current operations from concrete expansion plans instead of treating every ambition as an existing activity.

Applicant

Next identify the applicant. The shop name, the company’s legal name and the intended trademark owner may differ, so prepare consistent information. In a partnership, ownership should be a business decision rather than something left to the logo designer. Record internal authorisations, contact details and the person responsible for following the file. This helps avoid confusion when documents or official notices arrive.

Preliminary search

Carry out a preliminary search for the name and visual mark. Consider similar pronunciation and appearance as well as identical spelling. Read the results alongside the relevant goods and services; an empty search screen is not a favourable registration decision. TÜRKPATENT provides access to its official search tools at https://www.turkpatent.gov.tr/marka. Keep the search date and queries in your file so that later review has a clear starting point.

Documents

Check which version of the mark will be filed. Gather older logos, alternative spellings and product packaging used by different teams, then identify the approved version. Compare the proposed goods and services with your plain-language business description. Copying another business’s list may add services you do not provide or leave out activities in which you actually use the brand.

After submission, keep the application number, submitted documents and official correspondence together. Decide who reads notices and who coordinates any response, rather than relying on an unattended inbox. Follow examination, publication and possible opposition according to the file’s status. Completing one administrative step does not finish the entire process; review what each change in status means for your application.

Prepare a compact application file containing the approved mark, ownership information, activities, search notes and monitoring responsibility. This makes unresolved questions visible when speaking with your representative and reduces repeated work. Update it when a new logo or service is considered. Application preparation is an exercise in describing your business accurately, not merely completing a form. For the relevant process and preparation, visit /en/hizmetler/marka-tescili.
